Upcoming Mobile Index

Google is making some changes that may have some big impacts on your websites search results. At Pubcon Google's Gary Illyes gave a keynote address where he stated Google was creating a separate mobile index. He also stated this index would become the primary index and would be more up-to-date than the desktop index. He told Search Engine Land that Google would release this in months.

You may be wondering what this means and how it impacts your business. First let's talk about the basics before we think about what this means. Google has created a system called the Googlebot that crawls your site (examines the content and structure). It looks for relevant information to add to Google's searchable index. When you type a search term into the Google Search Engine the Google search algorithm sifts through the billions of pieces of data in the index to bring up relevant search results.

Why Does It Matter?

The importance of having two separate indexes is that the search algorithm will look through two different sets of data for your term. This means that when Google indexes your site it will index it once for mobile searches and once for desktop searches. If your site is not mobile-friendly it may fail to make it through the indexing and sifting of the algorithm. If this happens your site will not show up on mobile searches.

This is a serious problem if you are a small business. Google has reported that "88% of people who conduct a local search on their smartphone visit a related store within a week." Google has also reported that the number of people who only use a mobile device is nearly double that who only use a desktop. If you are not reaching the mobile-user market your website will fail to generate traffic and bring you business.

Solutions

The obvious question is, What is the solution? The answer is quite simple. You need to make sure that your website is mobile-friendly. You should also ensure that your mobile friendly version is relevant to what people are looking for on mobile devices.

Now it should be stated that there are two main methods of creating mobile and desktop websites. One is to create two different sites, one for mobile and one for desktop. The other option is to create one site that reconfigures itself to fit the display. This second type is called a responsive site. Here at CairnTek we only build responsive websites. There is are a lot of reasons for this. However, now that Google will be rolling out two indexes it is all the more important that the mobile and desktop websites contain similar if not identical data. This is easily achieved with our responsive website design.
